Nothing says fall like heading to the local apple farm with the family, picking your own apples and going home to make a tasty treat together. Here are 5 family friendly apple desserts kids will love to help make and eat.

  1. Baked apples- Wash, dry and core 4 large baking apples.  Mix together ½ cup of brown sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon.  Remove a slice off the bottom of the apples so that they will stand upright in a baking dish.  Place all apples in a square baking dish.  Fill the centers with the cinnamon and brown sugar mixtures.  Cover the apples with waxed paper and bake apples on high in the microwave for 6 to 10 minutes or until cooked.  To serve have an adult move apple to a bowl and drizzle with the syrup in the bottom of the dish.  Allow to cool a little before eating because it will be very hot.
  2. Apple Crisp- Wash, core and slice six apples.  Place sliced apples in a baking dish.  Sprinkle a small coffee cup full of sugar and a few shakes of cinnamon over the sliced apples.  In a bowl use a fork to mix together; 2 pinches of salt, 1 cup of oatmeal, ¾ cup of brown sugar, ¼ cup of flour and 1/3 cup of butter.  Have a parent help with measurements if needed.  Once combined top the apples with the crumble mixture.  Bake at 350 degrees F for 35 minutes.  Adult help will be needed with the oven.
  3. Caramel apples- Wash and dry 6 apples.  Take off the stems and push a craft stick down into the apple where the stem was.  In a glass bowl unwrap and put in a 14 ounce package of caramels and 2 tablespoons of milk.  Microwave the bowl of caramels and milk for 2 minutes, stirring once.  In the meantime butter a baking sheet.  Dip the apples into the melted caramel and coat the apple.  Place dipped apple onto baking sheet and leave on the counter to set.  You can roll the apple in nuts if you’d like.
  4. Apple Oatmeal bars- In a bowl combine 1 cup oatmeal, ½ teaspoon of salt, ½ cup butter, 1 cup of flour, and ½ teaspoon of cinnamon.  Press half of the mixture into the bottom of an 8×8 glass baking dish.  Wash, core and slice 2 large apples.  Spread the sliced apples over the bottom layer and sprinkle the remaining mixture on top. Bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees F.
  5. Apple Smiles- Wash and slice apples into wedges.  Spread peanut butter onto one side of the apple and top with mini-marshmallows. Press a second wedge on top to create the lower lip.
